Why Your Business Secrets Shouldn’t Be So Secret

There’s a wall coming down in the world of business. It’s a tall and thick wall, but it’s slowly being pulled apart, brick by brick. The wall I’m talking about is the wall we use to guard our secrets.

It surprises me to no end how many small businesses think they have the next recipe for Coca-Cola embedded into their everyday practices. At least, that’s how many businesses seem to act. The truth is, whatever business “secrets” you have probably aren’t that secret after all.

So, how is this wall coming down? It’s being pulled down through content marketing and blogging. By sharing your business “secrets” with other B2B companies, firms, and agencies, you boost your own reputation. When you share your stuff, you become elevated to the status of authority in the eyes of others.

How Many Recipes Have You Been Given?

Now, how many of those recipes have you actually cooked? Yeah… that’s what I thought… not many, right? Just because you tell someone how to do something doesn’t mean they’re going to go out and do it!

I run a content writing service for agencies and Web-based clients. Just about every day, our company posts informative, “how to”-style blog posts that lay out exactly how to do what we do.

Have we lost business from telling everyone how we make money? Of course not! Just because we share our methodology, it doesn’t follow that our potential leads are going to say, “Okay, thanks, I’ll just go do this myself.”

Rather, we leverage our blog as a way to establish a reputation with our leads. We let our readers come to their own conclusions, and then choose us for their blogging/content writing needs.

Do you have some great “recipes”? Then I’d urge you to share them – don’t hold back.

You Don’t Really Have a Secret

Okay, I’m not trying to step on anyone’s toes here, but, I’m willing to bet you don’t have a secret. Of course, you’ve learned some valuable life lessons from your own business. But, is there anything that you’ve experienced or learned that literally nobody else is teaching or doing? Doubtful.

And, if you do have some magic secret, it’s still unlikely that anyone is going to steal it and run off. Cross-reference me with this smart article.

So, why aren’t you sharing more? If you aren’t blogging or being social, maybe it’s time to start. Blogging is a great way to bring down those walls, and let others see just how smart you are. And, don’t worry – you aren’t going to lose leads. If anything, you’ll start raking them in by the handfuls when you share your secrets!
